"Enemy" Defends Awards' Slight for Niagara's Mason

It's not often that we use this space to refer to work done elsewhere, but we'll make an exception for the one you can find via this link:

http://maac.canisiusgriffin.com/why-Antoine-mason-deserved-first-team-honors/

It's an opinion piece about why Niagara's Antoine Mason should have been a first-team all-MAAC selection instead of the second-team honor he was accorded by the vote of league coaches.

First, your Hoopscribe is in full agreement. How the heck does the nation's second-leading scorer get left off the league's top team?

The "excuse" is that Mason's team, Niagara, had a poor season. But, that's not Mason's fault. When former coach Joe Mihalich left for Hofstra in April, five other players with eligibility also left the school, including two that went with Mihalich to Hofstra.

What makes the story to be found via the above link so interesting though, is that opinion piece was written by the sports editor of the school newspaper affiliated with Canisius, which is only Niagara's long-time rival in Western New York basketball circles.

It's kind of like one of the Hatfields having something positive to say about a McCoy.

And, it's an interesting, and well-done read.
